Have you noticed the interesting figures sitting on wooden poles along along Purchase Street lately? They’re works of art from Joan Benefiel and Jeremy Leichman’s Hudson River Pilings Project, and they’ll be displayed along Purchase Street and the Village Green through the end of May.

This installation is part of Beyond Rodin: New Directions in Contemporary Figurative Sculpture, an exhibit at the Rye Arts Center curated by local sculptor Bob Clyatt. The exhibit features 20 American sculptors who are creating innovative contemporary works built on a foundation of anatomical rigor and classical training in sculpting the human form. The works are made from bronze, wood, clay and space-age polymers and created using hand-modeling and carving methods as well as 3D computer technology.

Exhibiting Artists include: Emil Alzamora, Sequoyah Aono , Deborah Baldizar, Joan Benefiel & Jeremy Leichman, Paige Bradley, Susan Clinard, Tricia Cline, Bob Clyatt, Sarah Coble, Carole Feuerman, Barney Hodes, Alex Kveton, Jedediah Morfitt, Bret Reilly, Roger Reutimann, Bernard Rowan, Susan Saladino, Judy Sigunick and Chris Smith.

Just another great reason to take a stroll downtown this week!

During the first quarter of 2012, early spring temperatures brought early Buyers — kicking off the local spring real estate market a few weeks earlier than usual. And the early bird seems to be getting the worm — inventory is tight, but demand is higher.

First quarter saw a rise in the overall number of houses sold in Harrison (23 compared to 16 in 2011),  while Rye experienced a drop to 29 houses sold compared to 34 in 2011. Harrison zip 10577 also experienced an increase in Average Sold Price/Square Foot as it jumped from $293 a year ago to $331.  In Rye, a hectic pace has kept the number of active listings growing, and Average Sold Price/Square Foot  in 10580 jumped from $560 a year ago to $637.

It also worth mentioning that the 1st quarter of 2012 saw an increase in rate fluctuation as the winter months moved into March. Although it was winter, the warm climates certainly seemed to contribute to an active real estate market as it made everything (except skiing!) easier. Rates were impacted as the news oscillated—up and down is the best way to describe the last month.

Despite this fluctuation, rates continue to be good and refinancing activity remains strong. There appears to be more recovery in the real estate market in our area and with the allure of the small communities and the notion that perhaps these low rates won’t last forever, Buyers are coming out to purchase. Note that although rates will stay low through 2014, as we move closer to the election, we will most likely see more variability—up and down—in mortgage rates.
